Established initially in 1873 as Scott & Stewart, Maclaren Corlett LLP has reached its 130th anniversary of providing legal services to local, national and international clients on a wide variety of issues. View a chart of the firm's history, below.

The firm has remained moderate in size, yet has yielded five Partners and two former associates to the Judiciary and one Partner to the role of Commissioner of Patents.

While maintaining strong local roots to service the Ottawa community, the lawyers of Maclaren Corlett LLP are especially proud of their international reputation, with a client base which spans every continent in the world.

Maclaren Corlett LLP has been at the entry level of certain specialized areas of practice as these have evolved. For example, the firm was one of the first practitioners in the field when the Canadian Government instituted anti-dumping laws.

Maclaren Corlett LLP has been, and remains, legal advisor to trade associations, international organizations, non-profit groups, charities and Canadian and foreign Governments and agencies.

Members of the firm hold prestigious positions in organizations which operate internationally. Michael Chambers, for example, is President of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Gordon Greenwood operates as the Canadian representative on the Crisis Management Teams of several multi-national corporations.

Although a growing concept among some lawyers, Preventive Law is a term which best describes the historic attitude of Maclaren Corlett LLP. Identifying potential conflict areas and providing advice and assistance designed to minimize future legal problems and the necessity of litigation, has long been the philosophy of the firm. While having a strong and experienced litigation department, their advice is equally valuable in foreseeing potential disputes and assisting with common sense preventive measures.

The reputation of Maclaren Corlett LLP arises from a genuine concern for the issues affecting its clients coupled with the ability to service their needs efficiently and effectively both in terms of quality and cost.
